If you’re a person that subscribes to the teachings of Jesus and want to see his teachings represented and reflected in modern society, there are some policies you need to get behind and support if you truly believe in Jesus’ teachings. It is not possible to claim to be a follower of Jesus while also supporting or opposing policies that would run counter to what Jesus taught his followers. If you find yourself engaging in mental gymnastics to justify why these policies should not be implemented in society despite being in alignment with what Jesus taught, then you have to ask yourself whether Jesus Christ and his teachings are actually for you. His teachings/theology are pretty straight forward, and it’s not one that allows for cherry picking of values that only you personally agree with, that’s not how ideologies work. Once you start deviating heavily from what Jesus taught, you simply cannot call yourself a Christian or one of his followers. Saying you accepted Jesus as your savior is not what makes you a Christian. It’s actually following his teachings. At no point did Jesus ever say ‘accept me as your personal savior’ as the necessary step towards being a Christian or accessing heaven that is within us all waiting to be unlocked.
Jesus Teachings That Could Be Implemented in Society and Should Be Supported By His Followers.
- Jesus often spoke about helping the poor and needy. Matthew 25:35-40, He says that caring for the hungry, thirsty, stranger, and sick is akin to serving Him. Social policies that oppose helping the poor and marginalized stand in direct opposition to his teachings here.
- Healing the sick and caring for the ill is one of the biggest aspects of Jesus’ ministry (Matthew 9:35). Opposing and pushing back on government programs that seek to help mandated programs to provide easily accessible healthcare and help the sick (Affordable Care Act, etc) similarly interferes with Jesus teachings.
- Jesus emphasizes welcoming strangers and showing kindness to foreigners (Matthew 25:35, Hebrews 13:2). Some politicians and policies have pushed for stricter immigration laws, which are clearly motivated by xenophobia instead of unity/oneness with our brothers and sisters. Many outright oppose even immigrants whether they are coming here to support our economy (Springfield, OH) or desperate refugees looking for help.
- Jesus Taught forgiveness and redemption, and we do not see this practiced much at all in our court system. A true society that is based on Jesus values would not be based on retaliation/revenge, and would be moreso focused on forgiveness/redemption and rehabilitation. A true society based on Jesus’ teachings would never permit laws that uphold ancient biblical laws like ‘eye for an eye…’ which were made obsolete by Jesus teachings.
