You are not being punished for your misdeeds/sins by a vengeful god.
It’s easy to view unpleasant and unwelcomed circumstances in one’s life as divine retribution for our shortcomings, a cosmic punishment for less-than-virtuous actions. While this take may seem unfitting at first glance, it is more granular than it appears on the surface. God is not some distant figure stroking His beard and deciding who to judge and punish next for their failings. The reality is far more nuanced and not vindictive/punitive. The common portrayal of a vengeful punishing God is a massive distortion of the true nature of reality and universe, which religions and churches have taught for 2000+ years. It’s one of those mythical misconceptions that have driven skeptics and atheists away from spirituality.

In truth, your thoughts and actions set off a ripple effect in the cosmos, triggering inevitable reactions and consequences. We are all interconnected in ways more profound than we often realize. When you extend kindness or help to another, that goodness inevitably returns to you. Conversely, when you harm or wrong someone, that too will find its way back, bringing misfortune in due time. It is cause and effect on a cosmic scale. It is impartial/neutral to any religion and we are all subject to it, in the same way we are all subject to the laws of gravity. So while this may appear on the surface to less enlightened folks that they are being punished, they are just in fact experiencing the consequences of all their thoughts and actions.

Refusing to accept this reality will not change the fact that you are still subject to these universal and natural laws of nature. We casually acknowledge these instances when we playfully dismiss them in our everyday life as ‘karma’ when more often than not, that’s exactly what it is. Everything you say, think, or do has an impact/effect that will inevitably impact you.

For Christians who find this notion too aligned with Eastern philosophy, you’re not wrong—it is, and it’s also part of the foundational teachings of Jesus. These eastern teachings are completely in line with what Jesus taught, however he worded his teachings of these universal laws in his own style. What many attribute to Hinduism/Buddhism and casually refer to as Karma is, in fact, simply a fundamental law of nature. Just as gravity ensures that a falling object will hit the ground, so too do your actions and thoughts bring inevitable consequences on a larger scale that inevitably impacts you as the catalyst of said action. It’s an unchanging, universal principle that no faith or religion has any ownership of.

For Christians who resist this idea, I encourage you to read Jesus’ teachings. His guidelines for living a happy, fulfilling life are all centered around this basic truth: what you put into the world will return to you. This isn’t exclusive to any one religion, nor should it be. While Jesus was not the first or only spiritual teacher to illuminate this truth, he did bring it into greater awareness for countless people. It’s a principle that transcends faith and deserves recognition as a natural law.

  • When Jesus said, you reap what you sow, he is succinctly explaining that everything you will experience in life is a reaction to and consequence of something you did.
  • When Jesus advocated the golden rule, guiding us to treat others how you want to be treated, this is similarly based on an understanding that everything you experience will be a consequence of how you treat others, so let this be your guiding light in how to behave.

Be selfless. Be considerate. Show empathy, compassion, and generosity toward others. Be the person you would hope to encounter if you were facing hardship. The next time you see someone in desperate need—a hungry soul on the street—offer them a few dollars. No need for a receipt for a tax deduction or for recognition. Simply give, knowing that in helping others, you uphold the very values you would want shown to you in your own time of need.

Make no judgements towards them or assumptions about how they got to where they are in that place in life.

I am certain that this fundamental and undeniable law of the universe—its intricate balance of cause and effect—will one day be validated by modern science. Though the consequences of your actions may not be immediately apparent, the moment you act, the forces of the universe begin to shift. In time, whether in the form of blessings or challenges, you will inevitably experience the ripple effects of the choices you’ve made.

Think of every decision you make kicking off a Rube Goldberg styled device that inevitably delivers a consequence to you that you yourself initiated and are responsible for. It is based entirely on the fact that we are all interconnected with each other. So please do not hesitate to declare/acknowledge to the universe in your mind that we are all our father’s children and are all brothers and sisters. It’ll help squash your ego’s illusion that we are distinct and separate from each other.

For many, their first instinct is to reject this outright, saying “there’s no way I caused the current set of circumstances I’m currently dealing with”. However, this is the nature of reality. You’ve seen glances of this in your life as they get playfully dismissed as wild coincidences, manifestations and karma. However, those are in fact evidence that our consciousnesses and thoughts continually manufacture our reality. Those are not just “remarkable coincidences”. It should also be noted that there are no substantial difference between ‘prayers’ and ‘thoughts’ as both are vibrations being sent out to the greater universe and have consequences. In light of that, it’s important to be conscious of the constant stream of thoughts your consciousness outputs, either voluntarily or involuntarily. There is a reason why the silencing of thoughts via meditation brings peace. We are raising a dam to prevent the flood.

So discard this notion you have in your mind from thousands of years of misinterpretations that has led civilization into thinking we are being punished. If we experience suffering or reward, it is not the result of external judgment but the natural law of the universe at work. We are the architects of our own outcomes, the root cause of the forces that shape our lives.

For millennia, people have been misinterpreting natural karmic reactions to our actions as intentional rewards or punishments handed down by a god in the sky watching our every move. In truth, these outcomes are not divine interventions, but rather the workings of the universe’s natural laws and mechanics, in which every action inevitably triggers a consequence that reverberates back to its source. When misfortune strikes, such as an accident, it is not a celestial judgment for past misdeeds, but it the result of the energy one has set in motion—perhaps through harboring negativity or ill will toward others. The universe itself remains neutral, merely reflecting back the chain of cause and effect that one’s actions and thoughts have initiated.

It is not uncommon for someone to perceive an adverse event, like breaking a leg, as punishment ordained from above. However, if a person has persistently wished harm upon others, they themselves set the stage for such consequences to unfold. There is no divine force orchestrating these outcomes; rather, it is the individual’s own thoughts and behaviors generating the life they end up living and what ends up shaping their experiences. Ultimately, one is the architect of their own fate, continuously laying the groundwork for the life they encounter through every action and intention.

In closing, it is no accident that the continuous practice of meditation which in effect quiets our ego mind’s constant thoughts results in benefits that brings peace in people’s lives. If your mind is only centered on the negativity then you will undeniably invoke and invite negativity into your life. So learn to quiet your ego mind’s thoughts as much as possible and train yourself to reframe your mind and its thoughts to as positive thinking and optimism as much as possible. This pays back in spades.
