The belief that one race or culture is inherently superior to others is not a fringe idea operating outside of Christianity. It is, in many corners of American religious life, actively championed by people who identify publicly as followers of Jesus — the bumper stickers, the social media bios, the crosses worn prominently around the neck. The contradiction could not be more complete. Jesus taught against judgment, preached unity and humility, and insisted on the equal dignity of all people as children of the same Creator. Racial superiority is the precise inversion of every one of those principles.
That makes this especially revealing is how the ego operates here. The temptation toward racial pride works by selectively highlighting the achievements of one’s own group while erasing the contributions of everyone else. It constructs a narrative in which history belongs to a particular tribe rather than to humanity as a whole. That narrative is not only intellectually dishonest — it requires active ignorance of the vast, interwoven tapestry of human civilization, in which every culture has played an indispensable role.
The truth is straightforward: the great milestones of human history belong to the species, not to any single race or culture. Every advance is a step forward for all of us. Recognizing this is not weakness or self-erasure. It is both intellectual honesty and a spiritually liberating act — one that moves a person closer to the realization Jesus was pointing toward all along: that we are one, interconnected, and equally expressions of the same divine Source.
Performative Christianity that reduces Christ’s message to tribal identity — a way of declaring “my group is better than yours” — is not faith. It is ego wearing a cross. And the clearest sign that someone has confused the two is precisely the moment they invoke Jesus’ name while asserting the superiority of their race, their nation, or their culture over someone else’s.
That is not the path Jesus taught. It is the path he came to end.
