The tradition of saying “bless you” after someone sneezes has roots going back centuries. One explanation traces it to the year 590 AD, during a plague when sneezing often signaled the onset of illness. Pope Gregory I reportedly suggested that uttering “God Bless You” or simply “bless you” after a sneeze could provide protection against the disease.
Though its origins may perhaps be seen as superstitious, today it remains a customary gesture of social etiquette. However, in truth the practice carries more weight and impact than mere superstition when those blessings are genuinely meant; offering blessings to others not only sends positive vibrations that can impact others positively but also affects one’s own well-being. This principle aligns with the idea that what you give out returns to you, a universal law referenced by Jesus as “you reap what you sow.” Extending sincere well wishes, whether for health, success, peace, harmony, happiness and other positive outcomes, can yield benefits for both the intended recipient of those blessings and yourself.
This practice extends beyond mere politeness. It encourages a mindset of goodwill towards all, including those with whom one may not have a positive relationship with. By consistently wishing others well, whether aloud or mentally, individuals lock into a state of natural harmony with the universe and all may also experience personal growth by letting go of ego-driven grievances and resentments. The ripple effects of these kind gestures then become undeniable and inescapable. Your life benefits exponentially when you bless and wish others well. Those positive impacts come back tenfold when they’re extended towards others you do not have a positive relationship with something Jesus makes reference to when he says “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you” By choosing the route of peace, you are making an effort to become a part of the meek that will inevitably inherit the earth.
Conversely, negative thoughts, energy and persistent negativity overall will absolutely perpetuate negative circumstances for those who harbor those feelings and emotions. Recognizing and eliminating such toxic thought patterns is crucial for personal well-being and cultivating a more positive life experience.
Whether vocalized or internalized, these thoughts and intentions are vibrations sent out into the universe, which inevitably influence one’s reality. Put aside your ego, and wish all others well, no matter who they are.
