It’s easy to view unpleasant and unwelcomed circumstances in one’s life as divine retribution for our shortcomings, a cosmic punishment for less-than-virtuous actions. While this take may seem unfitting at first glance, it’s true and false. God is not some distant figure stroking His beard and deciding who to punish next for their failings. The reality is far more nuanced. The common portrayal of a vengeful God is a massive distortion of the true nature of reality and universe, which many spiritual practices have taught forever. It’s one of those mythical misconceptions that have driven skeptics and atheists away from spirituality, even though there is often a kernel of truth within these misunderstandings.
The truth is, there’s no one judging your every decision. In reality, every action you take sets off a ripple effect in the cosmos. We are all interconnected in ways more profound than we often realize. When you extend kindness or help to another, that goodness inevitably returns to you. Conversely, when you harm or wrong someone, that too will find its way back, bringing misfortune in due time. It is cause and effect on a cosmic universal scale. It is impartial/neutral to any religion and we are all subject to it, in the same way we are all subject to the laws of gravity. Any refusal to accept its reality will not change the fact that you are still subject to these universal laws of nature. We playfully acknowledge these instances when we notice them in everyday life as ‘karma’ when more often than not, that’s exactly what it is. Everything you say, think, or do has an impact/effect that will inevitably impact you.
For Christians who find this idea too aligned with Eastern philosophy, you’re not wrong—it is. But it’s also deeply rooted in the teachings of Jesus. These eastern teachings are completely aligned with what Jesus taught, he just worded these universal teachings in his own style. What many attribute to Hinduism or Buddhism and commonly referred to as Karma is, in fact, simply a fundamental law of nature. Just as gravity ensures a falling object will hit the ground, so too do your actions bring inevitable consequences on a larger scale that inevitably impacts you as the catalyst of that action. It’s an unchanging, universal principle that no faith or religion has any ownership of. Welcome to quantum physics/mechanics, it’s science not religion.
For those who still resist this idea, revisit Jesus’ teachings. His guidelines for living a happy, fulfilling life are all centered around this basic truth: what you put into the world will return to you. This isn’t exclusive to any one religion. While Jesus was not the first or only spiritual teacher to illuminate this truth, he did bring it into greater awareness for countless people. It’s a principle that transcends faith and deserves recognition as a natural law, not just a spiritual belief.
- When Jesus said, you reap what you sow, he is succinctly explaining that everything you will experience is a reaction to and consequence of something you did.
- When Jesus advocated the golden rule, guiding us to treat others how you want to be treated, this is similarly based on an understanding that everything you experience will be a consequence of how you treat others, so let this be your guiding light in how to behave.
Be selfless. Be considerate. Show empathy, compassion, and generosity toward others. Be the person you would hope to encounter if you were facing hardship. The next time you see someone in desperate need—a hungry soul on the street—offer them a few dollars. No need for a receipt for a tax deduction or for recognition. Simply give, knowing that in helping others, you uphold the very values you would want shown to you in your own time of need.
Make no judgements towards them or assumptions about how they got to where they are in that place in life.
I have no doubt that this fundamental and undeniable law of the universe—its intricate balance of cause and effect—will one day be validated by modern science. Though the consequences of your actions may not be immediately apparent, the moment you act, the forces of the universe begin to shift. In time, whether in the form of blessings or challenges, you will inevitably experience the ripple effects of the choices you’ve made.
Think of every decision you make kicking off a Rube Goldberg styled device that inevitably delivers a consequence to you that you yourself initiated and are responsible for. It is based entirely on the fact that we are all interconnected with each other. So please do not hesitate to declare/acknowledge to the universe in your mind that we are all our father’s children and are all brothers and sisters. It’ll help squash your ego’s illusion that we are distinct and separate from each other.
So discard this notion you have in your mind from thousands of years of misinterpretations that has led civilization into thinking there is a punisher up there. If we experience suffering or reward, it is not the result of external judgment but the natural law of the universe at work. We are the architects of our own outcomes, the root cause of the forces that shape our lives.
