Jesus famously said, “Blessed are the peacemakers,” but he often spoke in poetic, universal terms that at times can feel too indirect, figurative or abstract for modern audiences. If you’re anything like me, that phrase initially seemed more about cultivating a peaceful mindset and forgiving someone in your mind than taking direct action. But when you look closer, his message is far more urgent and practical.

He was calling on us to actively resolve our conflicts—to go out of our way to mend broken relationships. He was telling us to settle all lingering grudges, to reach out to those with whom we have bad blood, unresolved feuds, or deep-seated resentment. This means putting aside your ego, humbling yourself, and taking the first step—whether that means offering a heartfelt apology, extending forgiveness, or simply opening a door to reconciliation.

Tell them honestly what you did wrong. Acknowledge the pain you caused. Let them know you are truly sorry. And if they wronged you, forgive them—not just for their sake, but for both of your healing and for the restoration of peace in the world around you.

The natural order of the universe is harmony, love, and unity. Every time you choose peace over pride, you help realign yourself—and the world—with that divine order. Refusing to make peace is not strength; it’s often just a deep attachment to ego. And breaking free from that is the beginning of true spiritual growth.

While Jesus was undoubtedly a poet, his words—such as “Blessed are the peacemakers”—can feel too abstract for those of us who crave clearer direction. If you’re anything like me, you might have preferred something more direct from him like: “Go apologize to everyone you’ve ever wronged. Forgive anyone you’ve withheld forgiveness from. Do this, and you will begin to taste the euphoria I call Heaven, while alive, not after death.”

Because the truth is, it takes a tremendous amount of humility to sincerely apologize or to truly accept an apology. Doing so delivers a devastating blow to the ego—but it also opens the door to profound healing and spiritual freedom.
