When Jesus taught that those who value wealth and material possessions will find it difficult to enter the kingdom of heaven, he left no room for ambiguity about his stance on a society that prioritizes profit and monetary gain above all else. His message is clear: a civilization built on the worship of wealth runs counter to his teachings.

If you believe that profit and financial motives should reign supreme in society, you are not aligned with the teachings of Jesus—plain and simple. No amount of Christian bumper stickers or right wing memes you post can change this fact. Objectively speaking, you are merely a superficial supporter of his.

For further evidence of how far mainstream Christianity has strayed from the original teachings of Christ, look no further than the constant resistance to policies and programs aimed at helping the poor, the sick, and those seeking refuge or asylum. These positions are of course entirely motivated by a prioritization of money. Jesus’ position on aiding the marginalized could not have been clearer. When modern Christianity normalizes rejecting or demonizing such efforts—efforts that embody the most basic principles of his message—it becomes painfully evident how little of modern Christianity reflects Jesus’ teachings.

If your knee jerk reaction is to reject a post like this as “commie” content, you can call it whatever you like but you are also implicitly arguing that Jesus was a commie. I have yet to see any Christian successfully argue that Jesus would have been a proponent of unrestrained capitalism. Feel free to post your argument in the comments if you’d like.

To Christian nationalists advocating for a society that fully reflects Jesus’ teachings, such a vision would necessitate a radical departure from prioritizing money and material wealth as the ultimate values. Codifying the teachings of Jesus into law requires far more than singular focus on issues like abortion; it demands a commitment to all the principles he championed, not just the ones you like.

The selective adherence to Jesus’ message has long been one of the greatest reasons Christianity today often bears little resemblance to the faith he established. A truly Christian society would embrace not just some of his teachings, but the entirety of his radical call to selflessness, compassion, humanity, and empathy. The only reason capitalism has succeeded in this culture is due to the fact that Jesus’ teachings have been completely abandoned.
