With all due respect, anything in the Old Testament that contradicts Jesus’ benevolent teachings should be discarded and scrapped. It should be stated that due to Jesus establishing a very concrete set of ground rules in terms of how to lead one’s life, one can reclaim the highest level of consciousness and happiness available to us as well as reestablishing harmony with all our brothers and sisters on this planet and the greater universe. To accomplish this, one also needs to follow Jesus’ teachings without the interference of the Old Testament scripture that in some cases completely contradicts Jesus’ teachings. There needs to be a collective agreement with all followers of Jesus that his teachings should be the baseline for one’s life, and any opposing teachings should be ignored even if it’s biblical. This includes outright commandments to kill people.
The attachment to Old Testament scripture has been the root of much of the perversion and corruption of Jesus teachings that originates from people ceaselessly attempting to reconcile Old Testament teachings with Jesus teachings which is many cases is impossible, but establishes that the Old Testament and Jesus teachings are mutually exclusive in many cases. The mental gymnastics needed to justify some of the hateful or violent teachings of the Old Testament has been responsible for much of modern Christianity completely deviating from Jesus’ teachings, to the point that much of modern Christianity no longer resembles Jesus’ original teachings. This is simply due to modern Christians attempting to make two opposing spiritual texts and teachings coexist when they simply can’t. We’ve gotten to the point where Christians need to choose one or the other.
It is impossible to follow Old Testament scripture wholesale when there are random instructions that completely violate Jesus teachings. Stoning gay people to death violates Jesus’ teachings that we should treat others as we’d like to be treated and as brothers and sisters, since that’s literally what they are. It’s a concept our egos have deceptively fooled us into believing is not true, and that was one of Jesus’ biggest missions. Helping us realize that we are all one. The example in particular of how gay people should be stoned in the Old Testament continues to influence many modern Christians and how they aggressively treat gay people despite Jesus teachings us that only the sinless get to throw stones. His teachings are ignored despite those instructions in the Old Testament not aligning with his very straight forward benevolent teachings.
For followers of Jesus teachings, one has to pick either the Old Testament’s teachings wholesale or Jesus teachings which wiped the slate clean and taught everyone how to successfully establish unity with all and achieve the highest level of happiness and consciousness as humans.
To be frank, most Christians should abandon the problematic sections and teachings of the Old Testament especially since Jesus’ teachings provided all the teachings and tools necessary in order to reestablish our unity and universal consciousness. This can be achieved completely by utilizing Jesus’ teachings and without ever having opened an older book in the bible. While some of the Old Testament writings compliment Jesus teachings, much of it completely violates it. Perhaps we are overdue for a stripped down version of the Old Testament, that purges any toxicity and acknowledges that some of the more fantastical tales early in the Old Testament were simply parables and stories that were being circulated during that time. There are other historical stories that also utilized plot devices like a great flood that destroyed humanity, two of which are The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Atrahasis epic which predate the story of Noah’s Ark by over a thousand years. The story of Adam & Eve was simply a parable symbolizing how our natural unity with the universe was severed by accepting and embracing our egos and intellects that segregated us from the greater universe as well as each other. For those that believe this must be believed as a a literal story, the point of said story went over your head, and you will not eternally burn in hell for accepting it was a metaphorical fable instead of literal truth. That is your reminder and cue to let go of constant fear that religion has instilled in you. You can embrace spirituality without living in constant fear of beliefs of a sadistic or vengeful god watching their every move and belief you hold. Your first hint that Adam & Eve was simply a fable utilizing symbolism to send the reader a message is the use of a talking snake in the story. The fruit from the tree of knowledge symbolizes our total embrace of free will, our egos and intellects that came along with that… but also brings us the pain and torment that comes along with shifting to our egos and overactive minds. This is arguably what is being described when the term ‘Original Sin’ was introduced. It represents a disconnection from the greater universe and our neighbors and the happiness that comes along with it. As humans, it is a euphoria that we are responsible for reclaiming, as that happiness is our birthright and attainable for anyone who pursues it.
Reclaiming our higher universal consciousness via accepting the will of the universe, relinquishing our free will and egos is the key to reclaiming the bliss and ecstasy only hinted at in the fable of Adam and Eve prior to our embrace of free will over the ultimate will of the universe. That said, it is critical for those who recite the Lord’s Prayer taught by Jesus to actually understand and mean what you say when you state “let thy will be done”. This should not be cited as a passive statement, it should be a declaration of conviction, surrendering your free will and yielding instead to the greater will of the universe, in order to reclaim the ecstasy and glory before our ego consciousness took over.
For Christians who still insist on using this demonstrably effective path to a spiritual awakening to claim their faith is superior to others; while Jesus was certainly someone who had surrendered his free will to do what the greater universe was guiding him to do, he was also teaching methods and practices that were also taught by other spiritual leaders such as Buddha, so no single faith has any ownership of these universal truths and keys. It is much more practical to say you practiced Jesus’ teachings but to not label yourself a Christian since it would be engaging in tribalism, segregating you from others when we are all in fact one as Jesus taught. Your desire to distinguish yourself from others as ‘separate and individual’ is evidence of your ego being in the driver’s seat of your consciousness and violates Jesus’ teachings.
Unfortunately, since Jesus’ death, humanity as a species, for the most part, has completely dropped the ball in upholding and carrying forward his ideas and teachings with any fidelity or loyalty. For skeptics of modern Christianity that often point out how mainstream Christianity often delves into blatant hatred of others; this is not only true, but goes back thousands of years due to Jesus’ message consistently going over the heads of all his followers after he passed.
A few notable examples are The Crusades, The Spanish Inquisition, the conquests of North American lands by Europeans. These were all committed by self identified Christians who, had they actually followed Jesus teachings, would have never planned and executed any destruction and murder of fellow humans. In more modern times, we see other violations of Jesus teachings such as Christian Nationalism in the United States, which once again reinforces tribalism within culture, segregating people, instead of uniting them. This is despite being what is perhaps the most diverse nation and culture in human history. These are actions that would be inconceivable in the minds of actual followers of Jesus teachings had actually understood and upheld his teachings. It’s difficult to claim this is truly a Christian nation as many fundamentalists claim, when in international affairs we do not shy away from any war, supporting much of the conflict in the Middle East despite Jesus’ instructions to act as peacemakers. Any self described followers of Jesus would be pushing for the United States to act as peacemakers, not take a side in the conflict. Other modern instances of violating Jesus’ teachings in a supposed Christian culture are American political ideologies that emphasize putting the individual self before others, which is completely selfish and antithetical to Jesus’ teachings. This is despite their proud claims to be Christians in a Christian nation.
For many self identified Christians, they see their religious group as yet another tribe to belong to, so they can see themselves as superior to another group of people. As if, feelings of superiority through race and nationality was not enough. What better way to claim superiority over another group of people than by claiming God is on your side.
Religion as whole has unfortunately been a destructive force towards a unified human species, and ironically if Jesus’ teachings had been properly followed, there would be no religion, and no segregation of people into groups, even though it sounds like an idealized fantasy, it’s something that is completely achievable had Jesus’ instructions been followed since his directions were universally beneficial and not necessarily exclusive to the faith and ideology he was establishing. An atheist can follow them, a Buddhist can follow them and re-establish a total unification with the universe. Ultimately there would be no borders or boundaries between people had humanity actually applied Jesus teaching successfully. You’d be hard pressed to find a secular person who could find something wrong with teachings like forgiveness, not retaliating, and to treat others how you’d want to be treated. These are universal laws that could be practiced by anyone regardless of your religion or lack thereof. Jesus’ benevolent teachings were his only instructions. He gave no instructions to worship him despite the demands of modern churches and despite Jesus’ instructions to not have any idols before our greater father. He gained his following by teaching his followers these proven methods and practices, and they didn’t need to wait for him to die to achieve the spiritual awakening he was teaching all of them to achieve.
Jesus gave us very clear instructions on how to achieve this higher spiritual consciousness, the state of ecstasy where you are freed from your ego and reconnected with the universe was so euphoric he called it heaven and said it was within us because it was always literally accessible right under our nose. Like an internal switch for happiness we all have, that simply needs to be flicked on. It is accessible now, no need to wait until death. Attaining this euphoric state of universal consciousness is your birthright, so let go of any fear of death, as we are eternal being one with the universe. Heaven is accessible now, just be humble and surrender to the greater will of the universe and accept your unity with all your brothers and sisters as well as the greater universe. Smartest trade you’ll ever make.
